Graham Pullin and I are always trying to come up with nice ideas for "public" examples of physical computing that we can have hanging about in the department. We've always kept coming back to Brendan Dawes' doorbell (see his book "Analog In, Digital Out") as a lovely piece of physical computing, in which a bell rings whenever the website has received a visit.
Its simplicity belies the underlying complexity, and having an audible realtime monitor of website activity is somehow much more profound than looking over the stats delivered by the webserver at the end of the day.
