PLaCE Visiting Speaker Series 2011-12 : Dr Rachel Sweeney & Marnie Orr

Rachel Sweeney & Marnie Orr, Bridgemia
PLaCE/LAND2 Speaker Series 2011-2012
Thursday 15th December 2011, 18.00-19.30

Dr Rachel Sweeney & Marnie Orr: Sandskin | Bloodwater: tracing topographies through floodlands
Dance ecologists Rachel Sweeney and Marnie Orr present their ‘live research’ practice that maps parallel geological features, identifying transnational environmental themes between the UK and Australia. Reflecting on pre-existing models of site-based contemporary performance practice, they will introduce their recent project Sandskin | Bloodwater, developed in direct response to remote farming areas devastated by flooding in Western Australia. This presentation directly addresses current themes surrounding regional and global water management, using maps, collated stories and photographic documentation to illustrate where emergent collective responses to flooding might present their own critique of map making, performance writing and ephemera, locating instead an ecologically-based vernacular that operates within a somatic-empathetic framework, within environmental performance practice.

Since 2007 Orr and Sweeney have co-facilitated residential research intensives in remote and regional locations in UK and Australia, developing a method for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary live research practice based in site, bringing together professionals from land science and various arts disciplines. Recent commissions include a
Lisa Ullmann Dance Scholarship (2009), Inhabitation Kalamunda (2009); a full-length multimedia dance performance on the Blackwood River, Bridgetown Western Australia; Mapping Project (2008); a choreography and cartography collaboration with Dartmoor National Park Education Department and Palimpsest (2007); a Dance in Devon film commission.
