Dr Ruth Jones
PLaCE/LAND2 Speaker Series 2010
Dr Ruth Jones
Ritual, Community and place in performative and lens-based practice (part 1)
Thursday 25th November 2010

Ruth Jones is currently AHRC Research Fellow at UWE in Creative and Performing Arts, exploring ritual, liminality and place in lens based and performative practice. Her recent work has focused on relationships between humans, animals and the land in Pembrokeshire and explores the magnetic pull that particular places have for people. Drawing on mythological crossings between humans and other animals, Ruth’s video installations and public art projects look towards greater fluidity between self, others and the environment. Ruth will discuss recent film projects Vigil and Chwarel created in West Wales and the ongoing Holy Hiatus events, symposium and publication that invite participants to engage in ritual activity in relation to place.

Ruth Jones is an artist based in South Wales. She has exhibited widely in the UK, and internationally in Ireland, Poland, USA, Spain and Quebec. Her research focuses on liminal states of being or consciousness and recent projects include
Sleepers (2006), in conjunction with Oriel Mwldan, Ceredigion and Bordering (2006), and art-geography collaboration and public art project in Oswestry, Shropshire, Holy Hiatus (2008), a curated series of public art projects, Vigil (2009) and the video installation, Chwarel (2010), film installation.
