Places of Peace

A web project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council 2005.

Surprisingly little research work has been carried out on ‘landscapes of peace’. Dedicated specifically to the pursuance of peace, such places are distinct from spaces of memory or remembrance.

Landscapes of military memory - cemeteries, preserved battlefields, ornamental displays - have been treated generically as spaces, parks or gardens of remembrance, but have rarely been critiqued as zones that espouse values of peace.

This project was funded by an AHRCG grant and consists of a website of essays, images, and a typology of peace motifs.

Amongst the peace gardens that are examined are the Peace Garden at Greenham Common, and the former GLC (Greater London Council) peace gardens in Islington, Peckham, and Camden.
