Deirdre O’Mahony

Deirdre O’Mahony is an artist and lecturer in the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Her practice is situated in the Burren Region in the West of Ireland and she is presently completing a PhD at the University of Brighton.

Recent research explores three themes concerning the relational dynamic between the local/rural and the national/global, the creativity of tacit, practice-led knowledge and ideas of ‘belonging’ in rural communities. A new project Mind Meitheal is a process that makes use of the cultural resonance of the Irish word ‘Meitheal’ - the practice of rural collectivity - as a generative catalyst for locally-based think-tanks. Based on the premise that different knowledge forms have parity in the design of creative, sustainable strategies for the future, Mind Meitheal process seeks to link situated, place-based knowledge with academic, cultural and institution-based knowledge and enable an open, transdisciplinary exchange.
