Jan Johnson

Jan Johnson has travelled numerous times to study the exquisite stitches of Scottish embroidery’s historic roots and revelled in its “subversive” past uses. Carefully unfolding textiles from the Needlework Development Scheme, and poring over details of a needle’s work with thread is only part of her research as Fulbright Scholar at the University of Dundee.

In 2015-16, she managed a near yearlong exchange with makers and experts in the fields of embroidery, material studies, gender studies, history, poetry, anthropology, philosophy, geography and more. Her intra-actions were not ordinary how-do-you-dos, and were often experiences through walking in local environs or trekking to remote areas over land and sea.

For her, learning about and gathering materials is practice-based research for making in place. Her practice is interdisciplinary, and in performative lectures, she has stitched groups of willing people together whilst discussing narrative, place, materials, quantum physics and matter mattering.

“On Stitching in Scotland: Stories, Schemes and Contingencies of a Gendered Material Practice” is the title of her Fulbright project. She holds an MFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design. In 2010, she was awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Drawing.

She teaches printmaking and contemporary issues at Clark University, is a visiting artist in public schools for the New England Arts and Literacy programme, and is also the director of the International Summer Art Experience at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Her work has been shown throughout the US, and internationally in Greece and the UK.
