Dr Iain Biggs RWA - Co-Director PLaCE

I work at the confluence of various creative practices, education, and as a researcher engaged with a broad range of topics focused by an overarching interest in the ecologies of place and identity. This involves me in various forms of ‘sense-making’ - through formal and informal teaching, place-based deep mappings, writing, and making visual artwork and books. I have published academic work on the politics of arts-led research, doctoral supervision and related educational concerns, and on various aspects of contemporary art related to place and identity, including deep mapping. Since 1997 I’ve been the editor and manager of Wild Conversations Press, which became a co-operative in 2012.

Although based in Bristol, I also have connections with County Durham, the English-Scottish borders, and the Scottish highlands. Until 2013 I worked as Reader in Visual Art Practice and Director of the PLaCE (England) Interdisciplinary Research Center at UWE, Bristol and continue some of this work through the MST and LAND2 networks and by acting as a supervisor/advisor for arts-led doctoral projects at UWE, Bristol, and Exeter University.

Collaboration is central to much of my work and I have undertaken projects with an architect on major building projects, with social scientists investigating rural connectivities in north Cornwall, with an ethnographer studying the behavior of academics at international conferences, with individual musicians and visual artists, and with doctoral and graduate students in fieldwork contexts.

I am currently involved in applied research focused on in- and extra- disciplinary thinking and practices, communities of transverse action, and ecological praxis.
