Laura Donkers BA MFA

The interconnectedness of art, ecology, site and politics provides a rich framework for artistic explorations. Through research and practice, I explore the 'act of dwelling' and develop ways that art can expand reflection on lived experience.

As contemporary lives become increasingly encoded and distanced from the land, so there are fewer opportunities to directly connect with the places where we live. Addressing this concern my creative practice employs field research modes of drawing, field-walking, and digital recording, to collect primary observations that trigger understandings of connection, presenting experiences of living 'first hand', in touch with environment, community and self.

Research combines environmental observation with sited social research underpinned by the philosophy of embodied existence as it is fundamentally determined by conception of land and place.

Projects translate research and practice into public outcomes that benefit the community, linking to the ways in which understanding of land and its relation to historical analysis can have immediate, beneficial effects for a community's own practices and recognition of what it means to live well.
